Mazeltov! Go the 30mm prime. Prime lenses are such great value, especially if you're mostly using them for indoor product-type shots, rather than as a walk around lens.

That said, at the moment I'm using the same sharp, if noisy, Tamron zoom everyone else uses on their Canon 350 and 400ds, and it's remarkably useful.

Also, buy yourself a flash. Trust me, you will never look back. I'm lost without my 580ex at the moment.

I love the comment that 'this lens doesn't scream "rob me"'. I'm sure that your average cutpurse does a quick assessment of focal length before mugging you.

I'm actually looking at this Sigma 30mm f/1.4 as the next purchase - (sadly) the Nikkor lens doesn't autofocus on the D40x, only AF-S and HSM lenses.

Cool, Phil! Look into getting this lens: Nikkor 35mm f/2. When put on that cam it will be the equivalent of a 50mm 'normal', and is the lens I use for the vast majority of my food pics.
